A century restored, Columbian Theater, Wamego, Kansas

This video describes the history and importance of the Chicago World's Fair, otherwise known as the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and banker and entrepreneur J. C. Rogers' efforts to preserve art and artifacts from the fair. Rogers lived in Wamego, Kansas, and purchased architectural artifacts and art created for the fair and brought them back to Wamego to decorate a new music hall and theater he built there. The film recounts the history of the theater, its closing and eventual restoration and the restoration of numerous paintings from the fair. This publication funded in part by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission through the Kansas State Historical Records Advisory Board.

This file includes general correspondence acknowledging the appointment and endorsement of William E. Thompson as janitor of the Memorial Building in Topeka, Kansas. To see his endorsement sent two days earlier on January 23, see UID 451646. The Memorial Building is also known as the G. A. R. Memorial Hall which is a historic hall for the Grand Army of the Republic. This is part of a bigger collection of Governor Arthur Capper correspondence.

This black and white photograph shows a crowd of people at an anti-war rally on the grounds of the capitol in Topeka, Kansas. The peaceful demonstration attended by about 1,200 college students, was held to protest the United States involvement in Cambodia and to ask Kansas Governor Robert Docking to call a special session of the legislature to consider an anti-war proposal. The proposed legislation would make it unlawful for Kansas citizens to fight outside the United States without a declaration of war by Congress. Governor Docking met with students and accepted their petitions for the special session, but no further action was taken toward the request.
