This photograph shows Hightower Theodore Kealing, President and Superintendent, of Western University in Quindaro, Kansas. During his tenure from 1910 to 1918, the University added a junior college and a school of religion. The school was established in 1865 and was located in the city limits of Quindaro along the south banks of the Missouri River in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Considered one of the earliest African American schools west of the Mississippi River it provided a four year education to African-American students for seventy-eight years until it closed in 1943.
