This photograph shows the statue of John Brown in front of Ward and Parks Hall at Western University in Kansas City, Kansas. The school was established in 1865 and was located in the city limits of Quindaro along the south banks of the Missouri River in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Considered one of the earliest African American schools west of the Mississippi River it provided a four year education to African-American students for seventy-eight years until it closed in 1943.
